L3 Small Group Facilitator Training

Dear Facilitator Candidate

Thank you for your willingness to serve others in learning the Listen Learn Lead (L3) model of suicide intervention. L3 Small Group Video Training is the logical next step in reaching more people. The L3 Small Group Facilitator will play a vital role in sustaining the growth of the Intervene Challenge.

Since 2012, more than 18,000 individuals have participated in L3 Training as the core curriculum in the Intervene Challenge. Up until the end of 2020 I was the sole trainer and all events were live and in person simply because I love being with people. I love seeing others come to the point of realizing that they can make a difference.  There was only one problem. One person can only train so many people in a year especially when we intentionally keep groups to low double digits. I find out that my max is around 4,000 people a year.

When the COVID 19 pandemic hit we had to cancel or postpone 15 training events. Thankfully, we were already moving toward a more viable and sustainable option for reaching as many people as possible. Six weeks into the shelter in place order I had trained 1,300 people online. Before then I had never even heard of Zoom. The next step was to train our first team of five trainers in Savannah Georgia who are now able to train others. We will continue to expand the T4T (Training for Trainers) program moving forward. But we are also aware that there are many people who have a passion for making a difference that might not want to stand in front of people for a day long training, but they know how to start a video and they can lead group discussions. Thus, the Small Group Facilitator training was launched, and I am truly as excited about this new initiative as I was my first class nearly 10 years ago. I also believe the timing is critical. The CDC reported in August of 2020 that suicidal ideation has nearly doubled in a year. One in ten people have had thoughts of suicide during these very challenging days and among young people the number is 1 in 4.  Building a network of care takes the efforts of many working together.

Your role as an L3 Small Group Facilitator is perhaps the greatest catalyst yet for assuring that the network is as big and strong as possible resulting in fewer lives being lost to suicide.

Be sure to like our private Facebook group at L3 Trainers and Facilitators.

Thank you for your willingness to be an agent of hope and a member of the network of care.  Together we will turn the tide on suicide.

Steps to Becoming an L3 Facilitator

Let's be clear about the difference between a Facilitator and a Trainer:

L3 Trainers are individuals that teach the L3 and have been specifically trained in the L3 T4T. Only certified L3 Trainers are authorized to conduct training using the L3 PowerPoint slides. L3 Trainers are also authorized to supplement their training with the L3 video as they see fit.

L3 Facilitators conduct small group discussions after participants have viewed the L3 video sessions together as a small group in a live face to face setting.  The L3 Facilitator is provided with the Facilitator Guide and all videos within the L3 series.
  • The first step in becoming an L3 Facilitator is to be the student.
  • Purchase the L3 video series.  The student cost for the series is $50.
  • After completing the L3 video series request the Facilitator Candidate application.
  • Schedule Candidate interview with Lou.
  • Participate in the group facilitator training as a live face to face or live online training.
Upon successful completion of the L3 Facilitator training the Facilitator will sign a Memorandum of Understanding and receive a 2 year license to conduct L3 training in small groups of 6 to 20 participants.  Listen Learn Lead is an evidence informed and standardized model of intervention training based on more than 1,400 successful suicide intervention by the curriculum developer. All video training sessions are to be used in conducting the training in order to maintain efficacy and standardization of content delivery. No part of the video training should be used outside of a standard L3 Training event or posted to any social media.

All particpants in L3 small group training should receive the L3 curriculum guide as part of the training.  L3 curriculum is copyrighted material. L3 Facilitators are authorized to purchase the curriculum for $15 per participant.
