Follow Up Training Opportunity after April 27th
I am looking forward to meeting you all April 27th at UNG Dahlonega for the Listen Learn Lead Suicide Intervention Training. As of April 2nd, 28 community members have registered, and we still have seats available. Invite your circle to join the network of care that is building hope and guiding others to safe harbor. ~ Lou Koon
After L3 on April 27th we will offer two training events for individuals that would like to be Facilitators and Trainers.
L3 Small Group Facilitator Training & CALM (Conversations in Access to Lethal Means)
L3 Small Group Facilitator Training & CALM (Conversations in Access to Lethal Means)
Participants that live in Lumpkin, Gilmer, Union and White County are invited to participate in two follow up events that can help you go to the next level in building community health. The four-county focus is based on the most recent data. Through 2020 these four counties have had a five-year suicide rate 100% higher than the state average. In the most recent two years each of these counties had suicide rates 175 to 215% higher than the state average. There is a tremendous need for training as many community members as possible.
CALM Train the Trainer
CALM: Conversations on Access to Lethal Means is a suicide prevention training that encourages safe storage of lethal means during a suicidal crisis. By temporarily putting time and distance between a suicidal person and highly lethal means, a life may be saved.
What Conversations on Access to Lethal Means is and is not:
Participants in CALM training will:
The CALM T4T is a two-day training event that will be conducted live online May 12th and 13th. This event is underwritten by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities and is free of charge. Registration is required.
What Conversations on Access to Lethal Means is and is not:

- Specific, effective part of suicide prevention
- Not suicide risk assessment
- Not the answer but should be included –Anyone can do it – not just in professional roles
Participants in CALM training will:
- Become more knowledgeable about suicide facts
- Learn how to inquire about the accessibility of lethal means
- Learn how to suggest safe storage
- About results of lethal means reduction in countries outside the U.S.
- Practice their new skills through role plays and group discussion.

L3 Small Group Facilitator
L3 Small Group Facilitator (SGF) Training is available to participants of the April 27th live L3 training with Lou Koon at UNG. Various dates are offered. SGFs are individuals that would like to go to the next level as a partner in building the network of care. SGFs utilize the Listen Learn Lead video series consisting of six videos and a Small Group Discussion Guide. Each video is from 20 to 30 minutes in length. After watching the video, the SGF guides the group in discussions to solidify learning. Total training is typically 6 to 8 hours depending on the level of group participation. Offer the Small Group Training in your community in one long day, split up over a month of Saturdays or whatever day works best. Typically, SGF training is $150, however the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities is underwriting this training event so there is no charge to register. Each SGF will receive a 3-year license to offer the training through AFM and the Intervene Challenge, Small Group Facilitator Guide, and L3 video series to conduct your first training, plus discounts on curriculum needs. A Focused Initiative
Rally in the 9th is a focused initiative of AFM and the Intervene Challenge rallying thousands in North Georgia to gain the skills that save lives. The Challenge features the Listen Learn Lead (L3) Model of Intervention and other world class training curriculums. More than 22,000 individuals in communities across the southeast have taken the Challenge. As a regionally focused initiative, Rally in the 9th seeks to create a sustained reduction in suicide that will lower the risk of suicide and save lives throughout North Georgia.
A Growing Network of Care
The University of North Georgia hosted the first Intervene Challenge in October 2018. Others have Rallied to the call including Truett McConnell University, Family Connection, United Way employess, various public safety agencies, Sigma Nu Alumni Chapter, Faith Groups and individuals from all walks of life.
Rally in the 9th is leading the charge to reduce the risk of suicide in the 9th Congressional District. Through a growing network of caring community members trained in the skills of suicide intervention we are creating a culture of care in the 9th District that serves as a beacon of hope for the entire state. It’s time to Rally! |
A Cause Worth Rallying To
We are seeking schools, faith groups, civic organizations, major regional employers, community nonprofits, Public Safety Agencies and others to join us in the mission to reduce suicide in the 9th Congressional District.

Imagine for a moment the 9th District is no longer home to 6 of the 10 highest suicide counties in the state of Georgia. Instead it's home to the top 20 counties with the lowest suicide rate. This is my hope for North Georgia!
My fondest memories are camping trips to Unicoi, Vogel, and Amicalola. It was these family memories that led me to attend North Georgia College in the early 80s. It is my love for the mountains and people of North Georgia that has led to the formation of Rally in the 9th. I dream of a day when 1 in 20 in the North Georgia region have been trained to make a difference for the 1 in 10 that have thoughts of suicide each year. I dream of a day when a young boy walking a mountain trail ask his father, “Dad what was suicide?" |
If such dream is to ever become a reality it will be because of many people working as one. No one person or organization can change the culture of health. Thus, Rally in the 9th is an invitation to all who are willing to rally with others in turning the tide on suicide in Georgia's 9th Congressional District. Rally in the 9th is a no turf zone. We don’t seek credit, but we do solicit the help of all. We encourage teamwork. In fact, we expect it. It's the only way we can truly eradicate the epidemic of hopelessness.
I am fully convinced that Intervention saves lives. Of the more than 1,600 interventions I have conducted in both military and civilian communities 100% are still alive. This is not unusual. In 1978, Richard H. Seiden Ph.D, a Berkeley University professor seeking to convince Authorities of the Golden Gate Bridge to build a suicide barrier reported that between 1939 and 1970 more than 500 people were stopped from jumping; someone intervened. Over a forty year period 94% of those individuals were still alive. Forty years after his report, the Golden Gate Bridge is finally getting a suicide barrier.
It is my hope that Rally in the 9th and the Intervene Challenge will be the barrier that reduces suicides, renews hope, and saves lives in the community that I love deeply.
This is your invitation to RALLY! Become a partner with your monthly financial support, take the Intervene Challenge, and together we will turn the tide on suicide. ~ Lou
